Project LABS was conceived of and initiated in 1989. In 1990, the National Science Foundation awarded Project LABS a three-year grant. During this time, Rohm and Haas provided additional funding for equipment, publication costs, and other incidental expenses. In 1994, Rohm and Haas assumed complete funding of the program and is committed to its continuation.
Since its inception, more than 100 teachers and 75 Rohm and Haas research scientists have participated in the program. Working in small teacher-scientist teams during the summer months, their efforts have resulted in more than 110 science lessons in a variety of disciplines. These lessons cover a wide variety of topics, including environmental science, natural habitats, plant biology, insect morphology, polymer chemistry, separation technology, coatings, agricultural chemistry and more.
Project LABS teachers have spread the word of these efforts by conducting more than 160 presentations for some 5,000 additional teachers and education students. In addition, thousands of Project LABS booklets and experiments have been distributed over the years. Some of the projects have even been published in national science teaching journals. Altogether, we estimate that Project LABS reaches about 25,000 students each year. And today, thanks to the magic of the web, anyone with an internet connection can access Project LABS and benefit from Project LABS materials.
